This Angkor Wat sunrise couples photoshoot in Siem Reap had the perfect combination of a beautiful sunrise and a happy couple celebrating their recent engagement.
Whether you’re planning an engagement photoshoot, elopement, a proposal photoshoot or a simple couples photoshoot at Angkor Wat, sunrise offers the best combination of light and atmosphere to create something special.d
This couples photoshoot took place at sunrise at Angkor Wat, when the light is at its softest and most atmospheric. Sunrise is also the busiest time at the temple, so rather than trying to avoid crowds entirely, the focus is on working around them.
We moved between a few key areas around the temple, using light, angles, and timing to keep the focus on the couple while letting the background fall away naturally. The soft morning light made a big difference, giving everything a warmer, more atmospheric feel compared to later in the day.
The aim throughout was to keep things relaxed. A mix of simple direction and natural movement allowed the session to unfold without forcing anything, which tends to produce more natural-looking images.
The session was paced to include a mix of open, iconic views of the temple and more sheltered areas utilizing the controlled light, creating a varied set of images whilst moving through Angkor Wat.
Sunrise is still the best time for a couples photoshoot at Angkor Wat, not because it’s empty, but because the light is significantly better than at any other time of day.
The early morning light can be hard or soft depending on the cloud cover, but it’s always directional, creating a backlight which helps create depth and a more flattering and ‘epic’ look in your photos. Combined with the warm tones and natural haze, it gives Angkor Wat a completely different atmosphere compared to the harsher light later in the day.
Even with crowds present, the quality of light at sunrise allows for far stronger images. With the right positioning and timing, it’s possible to use that light to your advantage and create photos that feel calm and intentional.
The early morning is also the coolest part of the day in Siem Reap.
Photographing at Angkor Wat requires more than just finding a good location. It’s about understanding light, timing, and how to work within a constantly changing environment.
My approach is to keep things relaxed while guiding you just enough to create strong compositions. I combine natural interaction with simple direction, so you’re not left wondering what to do, but the photos still feel genuine.
A big part of this is:
This allows us to create images that feel calm and natural, even in a setting as busy as Angkor Wat.
Angkor Wat offers a range of different settings within a short distance, which makes it ideal for creating variety during a couples photoshoot.
Using these locations at the right time allows for a gallery that feels varied, without needing to travel between multiple temples.
Couples visiting Angkor Wat often use different terms when planning a photoshoot, but the approach is largely the same.
In practice, each session is tailored to you. The most important part is creating images that reflect your personality and your experience at Angkor Wat.
No two couples photoshoots at Angkor Wat are the same, and the approach always depends on what feels right for you.
Some areas are more open and exposed, especially at sunrise, while others offer softer light and a slightly quieter pace. Timing, light, and how much movement is involved can all be adjusted depending on how you want the session to feel.
For some couples, it works best to keep things simple, staying in one area and focusing on a more relaxed, natural flow. For others, there’s more flexibility to move between locations and create a wider variety of images across the temples.
Before each session, I plan the shoot based on:
The goal is always the same: to create a set of images that feels natural to you, and reflects your time at Angkor Wat without forcing anything or overcomplicating the process.
